After finding little success during their first recordings, the guys disbanded with their efforts buried in an attic for more than 30 years. Once uncovered, the excitement around those recordings led to performances, new songs, new records, tours and a documentary. Last year, the band was invited to tour the still under construction National Museum of African American History and Culture, the latest jewel in the Smithsonian Institution's crown. The band donated a drum to the collection, an artifact from their early days that was instrumental in their beginnings. We spent the day hanging out with the band as they visited the museum grounds as well as the American History museum, which housed some of the most high profile historical artifacts from the African American--rather, the American--story.
